One of the pleasures of being a tourist is finding and exploring new places and experiencing new things. North Island tourists can find a visit to Campbell River’s Willows Market a bit of an exploration in itself. Willows likes to think of itself as the antithesis of regular shopping and is quite happy being an enigma in a world of largely sterile shopping environments.

Willows likes to think of itself as the antithesis of regular shopping and is quite happy being an enigma in a world of largely sterile shopping environments.

Customers can expect an unusual and refreshing change from their everyday shopping experience since Willows Market changes with the seasons, changes with the moods and whims of the staff, and changes as new interesting and unusual products are found.

During the spring and early summer the store focuses on its garden centre, specializing in garden décor and container gardening. Of course, there’s a fair share of unique and beautiful specimen plants, but Willows sets itself apart from other garden centres by blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor decorating; a bench in just the right place to take advantage of a view, a fountain centerpiece, an eye-catching statue, running water to relax the senses.

Once summer rolls around, many local farmers start to supply their fruits and vegetables so the Willows focus shifts to running a farmers market. The owner’s family has been growing corn, strawberries, cucumbers, carrots, squash, tomatoes and many other vegetables on the family farm in the Alberni Valley for close to 50 years now, so when they moved to Campbell River it was only natural that they kept selling their produce. By July many of the famous fruits from the Okanagan are ready and several farms in Oliver and Keremeos ship directly to Willows.

By the time pumpkin season rolls around in October, shoppers are ready for a change and that’s about the same time Willows’ customers get serious about interior decorating.

Willows imports from all over the world. Distinctive products, the kind of things not found everywhere else, can be found at Willows Market, along with a fine collection of giftware, mirrors, wall art and prints, lamps, area rugs, vases, and furniture.

Willows Market has been called a lot of things ... eclectic for one, but even if customers don’t find something to take home, they’ve usually enjoyed their stop and will probably come back for another look.
And so they should because four months from now it will be another season and Willows Market will have a completely new look to offer.
